Principal's Welcome
Nau mai, Haere mai
We warmly welcome you to St Joseph’s School, Pleasant Point. We are a small, rural Catholic primary school (Years 1-8) situated in Pleasant Point, a rural town with a population of approximately 1200. St Joseph’s is currently a three teacher school with a maximum roll of 99. Due to its location, the school community enjoys easy access to a wide variety of recreational opportunities.
Since its inception in 1927-1928 up until 1992, the school was staffed in part by the Sisters of St Joseph of the Sacred Heart.
Our school vision is faith based “Growing in Christ; challenging mind, body and spirit.” The valued outcomes for children are centred on the Mary MacKillop values of gratitude, respect, make room for all, open to God and working hard to do your bit.
We have high expectations for learning, behaviour and engagement. We recognise the uniqueness of each child. We provide a rich curriculum to support learning to learn and we reflect the Maori world view of holistic learning and wellbeing.
We serve a wide catchment, with many children travelling by bus from rural areas.
We provide quality programmes that meet individual needs in a balanced way. We run a comprehensive system of individual support for students needing assistance with learning as well as acceleration.
As a Roman Catholic school, it works to carry out the Church’s mission. We provide a Catholic Faith environment which enables our young people to develop the attitudes, knowledge and skills to become active and committed members of our Faith Community and to contribute positively to the world community.
Liturgical celebrations are important and Masses held include a Mass of welcome to families in the new school year, celebrations for the Feasts of St Joseph and Mary MacKillop and a farewell Mass for our Year 8 students at the end of the year. Classes also attend weekly Mass on a roster system. Our Catholic character is an important part of school life and Catholic values are evident in every aspect.
The school enjoys excellent parental support through our active PTA and providing support with learning programmes, transport and supervision at events.
We offer a wide range of opportunities for all children such as camp for Year 6-8, class day trips, sporting and cultural activities.
We look forward to welcoming your family to our school.
St Joseph’s Pleasant Point is a member of the South Canterbury Catholic Community of Learning/Kahui Ako. (St Joseph’s, Temuka, St Joseph’s, Timaru, Sacred Heart and Roncalli - High School).
